THE BOATMAN

When I first saw Turkish artist Berkan Anıl Aksoy’s paintings, I was immediately struck by how each resembled a theatrical stage. All that was missing were curtains. I later learned that’s exactly how Berkan sees them. The Maiden’s Tower, one of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks, plays a major role in most of these visual plays. However, look more closely. You’ll find a second, ubiquitous presence: The Boatman. When I’d become more closely acquainted with Berkan, I offered another (and more profound) opinion. I suggested that this boatman and he are One. After an initial moment of shock, Berkan accepted this insight. (The unconscious works in mysterious ways.) You are invited to follow the exploits of this sensitive Don Quixote-like artist, whose unique style prioritizes emotion over form.
