When we talk about romance, years gone by, nostalgia, fantasy, and old loves all come to mind. In Türkiye, the Volkswagen Beetle—known locally as ‘woswos’—has always attracted attention. It’s timeless. Hundreds of people still want to experience that feeling regardless of whether they can afford it. You know the person driving a Beetle is a true romantic. I made a nod to this, together with the Boatman as the observer, the Maiden’s Tower as the stage, and a panoramic view of Istanbul’s famous Galata Tower across the way. The colors are brighter, reflecting the fact that I painted this while in Budapest visiting my two little nieces. I strongly recommend trying to look at it through the eyes of a little girl.
