Sunset at Pierre Loti Cafe

This painting is adapted from a work by the Turkish naïve painter Fahir Aksoy. It depicts the panoramic view of Istanbul from a unique vantage point: Pierre Loti Cafe. We see a couple from the hinterlands of Anatolia looking out over the Golden Horn. One can sense both the joy and magic Istanbul’s sheer size engenders, as well as the fear of the unknown, confusion, and chaos it also creates. I’m certain they’re drawing strength from each other as they take in the view. Like a couple of villagers coming to the city in old Turkish movies, it’s a blend of East and West. The Boatman says to them, ‘Welcome, I'm here, too.’
