Music Time
During a trip to Paris, I saw a group of street musicians, and sketched them immediately. What impressed me most was the expression on their faces. Music’s rhythm has a way of exposing a person’s inner feelings. I am a romantic person—a Don Quixote looking for genuine sincerity. Fake attitudes, grand gestures, or hollow words mean nothing. This translated quote from Burhan Uygur (one of my favorite painters) especially resonates with me: In my paintings, with every struggle, I hit myself with a scalpel, and with each scalpel, blood of different colors flows. I believe this forms the essence of my paintings. For the Boatman, it was just a quiet, normal day. Seeing him take a bit of that music into his day made me truly happy. I believe there’s a small Boatman inside everyone.
