Waltzing at the Maiden’s Tower

This painting’s rhythm emerged from my life. I danced tango for many years, so I know its heartbeat very well. It has a 4/4 rhythm: 1-2-3-4. It’s similar to walking; it feels heavy, close to the earth, very human. Waltz is different. It has a 3/4 rhythm: 1-2-3, 1-2-3. You don’t just walk. You turn in a circle with no corners, no real beginning, and no end. It’s timeless. When this couple embraces, they leave behind the earth and its heavy 4/4 rhythm. And enter the 3/4 rhythm of the waltz. They start to turn. And the clouds, the sun, and the universe turn with them. Maybe in that moment they cease being two separate bodies, and become a single movement. The four figures in the sky—three clouds and the sun—reflect this 3/4 rhythm. Moving together with the couple, they’re part of this dance. It seems the Boatman once again is only an observer.
