A KIND OF ALCHEMY

When Ruth Grim, curator of Ocala, Florida’s Appleton Museum of Art, discovered I’d studied “Islamic” art, she took me to their storage room. I quickly recognized a cache of medieval Persian pottery! Photographing each piece and then printing them at home, I was able to match many to cognates using my own art history library. “A Kind of Alchemy” was the result, organized by production technique. The exhibition was subsequently rented by The Frick, Pittsburgh—the first time the Appleton traveled an exhibition.
