COUNTER NARRATIVES

Californian Pablo Cristi’s artwork poses the question, “Who gets to tell who’s story?” He believes this question is particularly relevant to American groups and cultures that have been historically “otherized”—focusing on the Black, Native American, and Chicano communities. His work creates new histories that critique the dominant narratives, exposing the fault lines in American society. Blurring the lines between printmaking, drawing, and painting, these pieces are sometimes inspired by contemporary events. Exploring the issues of erasure, resistance, and survival, Pablo’s thought-provoking projects probe the very nature of American identity.
